Shoe Shining: A Lesson In First Impressions from My Dad

It’s been a few months now since Dad finished his earthly journey and there is not a day that goes by that I am not reminded of one or more lessons learned from his example. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like this morning…
Every time I walk through the airport, I am compelled to stop at the shoe shine stand for a quick buff and shine. (They do it so much better than I do!) I never saw Dad with anything but brand new looking shoes. He shined them every time he put them on for two reasons:
1. First impressions make a lasting impression. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. When you look down, it makes an impression (on you) when you look back up! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all know that what is on the inside impacts what people see and experience on the outside. Conversely, what’s on the outside effects how we feel on the inside and how we act. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A friend of mine who runs one of the largest call centers in the country experimented with “causal Fridays.” After two Fridays of dismal results, he discontinued the program. Dressing “down” took the results down with it! Dad figured that out a long time ago.
I am grateful for simple lessons like this that he not only taught along the way, but also left in writing to live way beyond his years in the form of his You Can Do It series of books. Crown Council practices all over the world have benefited from his weekly wisdom that is now codified in these books. They are great for any team and any individual who wants to stay on track with common sense truths that make life work. You Can Do It series is available at:
Now go shine your shoes!
